Bill Gerstlauer

Bill Gerstlauer, 81, of Huntsville passed away Wednesday. Mr. Gerstlauer was born in Doylestown, Penn., to Pauline and Russell Gerstlauer. He served in the 113th Battalion Sea Bees in the South Pacific for three years during World War II. While serving in the U.S. Army Reserves, he was activated and sent to Greenland. He served in the U.S. National Guard for 18 years. Mr. Gerstlauer graduated with degrees from Jacksonville State University and Peabody College. He taught math and English for two years in Alexandria. Beginning in 1954, his career included work with the government at Anniston Ordinance, Birmingham Ordinance, and then with Field Ordinance in Dallas. In 1964, he came to Huntsville and retired in 1979 from NASA. He then went with USBI in Huntsville for three years. He was a member of Weatherly Heights Baptist Church. He was an avid golfer and directed the Alabama Seniors Golf Association for about three years. He was preceded in death by his parents and sister, Yvonne Casey-Gerstlauer. Survivors include his wife, Frances Gerstlauer; daughters, Frances Olivia Gerstlauer of Jonesboro, Ark. and Susan Ann Willis of Madison; granddaughter, Whitley Raeann Willis of Madison; sister, Elaine Tutwiler; brother, Robert Gerstlauer of Oswego, Ore.; former son-in-law, Ray Willis; one niece, and five nephews. Visitation will be from 10 to 11 a.m. today at Weatherly Heights Baptist Church. The memorial service will follow at 11 a.m. with Dr. David Freeman officiating. Laughlin Service Funeral Home is assisting the family. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Weatherly Heights Baptist Church Building Fund. Bill was a member of the Alabama Seniors Golf Association for many years. He was active in the management of the association, serving on the Board of Directors for many years, before he assumed the position of Secretary/Treasurer for three years. Bill and Frances were extremely active in our organization and will be missed by everyone. Our thoughts and prayers goes out to Fances and her family.
